Before you go...
The list above highlights the must-see places when visiting Chania, but our guests should also be aware of the accessibility and suitability of each location, particularly when travelling with children or when time is limited.
Balos Lagoon is a paradise on earth, but it can get extremely busy during the day. There is an unpaved road from Kissamos to the lagoon, followed by a 15-minute walk from the car park under the sun. On the way back, you’ll need to climb uneven steps. If you don’t rent a 4x4, the car owner will not be happy for you to drive on this road, so please avoid doing so.
If you’d rather skip the adventure, there are daily boat trips to Balos from Kissamos. Marilee’s mother works for the company that operates these boats, so let us know if you’re interested and we may be able to secure a small discount.
Seitan Limani is a unique beach with crystal-clear waters. Due to its small size, it can get very busy during the day. Access is difficult via a narrow gorge, making it unsuitable for families with children.
Loutro is a peaceful village completely cut off from the rest of the island, as there are no roads connecting it to civilisation. The only way to reach it is by boat from Sfakia. It’s ideal for a quiet holiday, but for a day trip it can be quite a long journey. We recommend staying overnight if you decide to visit. There are also stunning, secluded beaches like Marmara and Glyka Nera nearby, accessible only by private boat. This stretch of coast is among the best on the island.
Samaria is one of the most beautiful national parks in the country, offering breathtaking views and a magical walk through a spectacular gorge. While it’s an incredible experience, it’s also quite demanding. The hike is 16 km long and can only be done one way, ending on the south coast. If you decide to go, the easiest option is to take the bus from Chania and buy a return ticket. Most visitors start at the gorge entrance and, after reaching the village of Agia Roumeli, take a boat to Sfakia, where buses are waiting to return to Chania. Think carefully before you go. If you do it, you might not be able to dance at our wedding afterwards… and yes, we’re serious!
